That used to be considered large in Rotary terms. In a change of policy Rotary International (RI) now regards the minimum size of a District should be 75 Clubs and 2,700 members. So we now belong to a district with potential to grow. Our District Extension Team has identified a number of towns which could support a Rotary Club and has targeted four of these as front-runners. The Team has also identified a number of potential locations for Rotaract Clubs.     September is NEW GENERATIONS Month In September - New Generations Month - we are urged to tackle the most critical challenge to the survival of Rotary – the introduction of young active members. In 1789, US Statesman, Benjamin Franklin, famously wrote: "'In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes". In fact, Franklin was echoing a 1726 statement of English writer Daniel Defoe, but, whatever the origin, the statement still holds true. A Rotary Club is the sum of it members and a Rotary Club will grow old and tired if it is not regularly injected with younger blood. A recent study shows that most Rotarians are between the ages of 50 and 59 and that those under 40 years of age make up only 11% of membership.     October is VOCATIONAL SERVICES month Rotary's ideal of service is based on The Four Avenues of Service – Club, Vocational, Community and International – which comprise Rotary International's philosophical cornerstone. Clubs carry out projects in each avenue in support of the Object of Rotary. In the late 1990s, following the introduction of the District Leadership Plan, the Community and Vocational Avenues were united in one committee. There is a feeling among some Rotarians that Vocational Service has suffered through this innovation. October is the month in which we have the opportunity to take stock of our own qualities which fit us to be good Rotarians. How long is it since you last heard or recited the Four-Way Test? Take the opportunity to read out the 24 –word code of ethics that was adopted by Rotary in 1943 and has been translated into more than a hundred languages since that time. It asks four simple questions of the things we think, say or do: 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"     November is Rotary Foundation Month: The Rotary Foundation was created in 1917 by Rotary International's sixth president, Arch C. Klumph, as an endowment fund for Rotary "to do good in the world." It has grown from an initial contribution of US$26.50 to more than US$117.9 million contributed in 2004-05. Its event-filled history is a story of Rotarians learning the value of service to humanity. As RI President Bill Boyd put it: "It's almost impossible to imagine Rotary today without The Rotary Foundation. So much of what Rotary is known for — international service projects, grants, scholarships and, above all, PolioPlus — depends on the Foundation. Without the Foundation, Rotary could never have grown into a truly international organization. A Rotary without Matching Grants, without Ambassadorial Scholars, and without the unifying fight for polio eradication would be a Rotary without many of the most important ties linking our clubs and districts.   Rotary International President Wilf Wilkinson   Our District Website, www.rotary.ie , has been revamped in line with the new RIBI corporate identity. December is Family of Rotary Month. We recognise the Family of Rotary in two ways. The first of these is through working with, developing and assisting the various organisations and affiliates in our Family of Rotary including Rotaract, Interact, Inner Wheel, Probus as well as keeping in touch with, and drawing on the resources of, our Rotary Alumni. Rotary Alumni are people who have availed of our various educational scholarships or vocational exchanges including Ambassadorial Scholars, Peace Scholars and Group Study Exchange. We should include Alumni in our activities and invite them to become Rotarians. Our Family of Rotary also includes Rotarians and their family members. We should keep in touch with members, spouses and family especially at times of illness and difficulty. January is Rotary Awareness Month Rotary, the world's first service club organisation, is made up of over 32,000 Clubs in 170 countries. Club members form a global network of business, community and professional leaders who volunteer their time and talents to serve others. Rotary's motto, "Service above Self", exemplifies the humanitarian spirit of the organisation's 1.2 million members. Strong fellowship among Rotarians and meaningful community and international service projects characterise Rotary worldwide. In Rotary Awareness Month, every member is encouraged to become better informed about Rotary and, in doing so, become even more proud to be a Rotarian! February is World Understanding Month Advancing WORLD UNDERSTANDING and peace, which is expressed in the fourth part of the Object of Rotary, is an important focus of Rotarian service. It is the impetus for numerous service efforts and other cooperative ventures among Rotarians from different parts of the world. It is the reason Rotary International has a long-standing, close collaboration with the United Nations and many of its member agencies. Appropriately, every year the anniversary of the founding of Rotary, 23 February, is celebrated as World Understanding and Peace Day. March is Literacy Month. Literacy has been one of the major emphases of recent Rotary International Presidents. Education is highly valued in our country which has seen the benefits of well-developed educational systems. However, both at home and abroad, there are many adults and children who have not received the educational benefits they need and deserve. Rotarians should be active in supporting literacy projects at home and abroad. April is Rotary Magazine Month. One of the requirements of being a Rotarian is to subscribe to and, hopefully, read a Rotary magazine. For many in the United States and elsewhere in the world the magazine is "The Rotarian". In Ireland we receive two magazines: "Rotary Today" published by RIBI and "Cogs" published by our own District 1160. Many thanks are due to our long-serving "Cogs" editor Jack Cunningham from Galway Salthill club. But Jack needs contributions and photographs to make a successful magazine. Do submit material to both "Cogs" and "Rotary Today". May is not designated for any specific purpose but it is the month in which we review what we have done over the past Rotary year and prepare for the coming year. Club AGM and Assembly are important meetings to be well attended, as are the District PEPS and Assembly meetings. All senior club officers should attend District Assembly.   RIBI President Alan Jagger A Fabrication Engineer, Allan started his own company with his wife Rose in 1968. Allan has several business interests mainly in the mechanical engineering field. Believing in a strong UK manufacturing industry Allan has served for the past 20 years as a Director, the last 14 years as Chairman of charity that provides work based learning and education for young people in West Yorkshire. Allan joined the Rotary Club of Elland in1983, and served as District Governor 1040 (the best part of Yorkshire) in 1999/2000. Totally committed to The Rotary Foundation Allan's ambition is to encourage every Rotarian in RIBI to financially support their charity. Chairman of the RIBI Foundation Committee 2001-03, Rotary Regional Foundation Co-ordinator for 2001-3 and from 2001 to 2006 was the Host Area Co-ordinator at Bradford University for the Rotary Peace Centre. Allan was awarded the Distinguished Service Award in 2003-04. Allan has served RI as a past committee member and chairman, presently he serves on the RI Leadership Development and Training Committee, Rotary's US$100 Million Challenge Committee and was a RI Training Leader 2005 and 2006. Rose and Allan are Major Donors and members of The Bequest Society. Allan and Rose have three married children and eight grandchildren. Rose is a Past President of the Inner Wheel Club of Elland. Allan enjoys Caravanning, learning computer skills, Gardening and Travel with Rose. Allan has been a lifelong supporter of the Scout Movement and is the President of the West Yorkshire County Scouts. Allan's Achilles heel is that he is a fanatical supporter of Leeds Rhinos Rugby League Club.	Club Programme News and Events 2007-08.. We were blessed with good weather. The plenary sessions featured excellent speakers. This was our biggest party yet. The kids were entertained and fed. Santa Claus presented each child with a gift. Airporter provides a regular service from Derry city centre and other locations to both Belfast International and Belfast City Airports. . 07 April 2008 - Lunch Time Meeting Our speaker was Kevin O'Connor of Donegal County Council. Kevin, a Derryman, spoke about plans to develop tourism in County Donegal. . 14 April 2008 - No Lunch Time Meeting - Stormont Visit On 14 April, over 25 members and friends visited Parlaiment House at Stormont at the invitation of our honorary member, Speaker of the Assembly William Hay. Following a guided tour of the building, our visitors sat in the gallery to hear and see demoracy in action. Lunch was served in the visitors dining room where, afterwards, we received a visit from Mr Speaker. Having addressed the visitors, Mr Speaker took questions and, in answering, gave a lively and informative account of our political process. . . 21 April 2008 - Lunch Time Meeting Annual General Meeting President Eamonn and his team will present their reports on the year to date. John gave an excellent report on the history, current status and plans for Dunree Fort. John is chairman of the company which runs the museum at the fort; one of a number of enterprises in which he is involved. To our delight, he also made a presentation of gifts; one for everyone in the audience. The meeting included Alan Seale from the Melbourne Central Sunrise Club in Victoria, Australia and his wife Robyn. The are currently touring Ireland and met up with PP John MacCrossan who had previously led a D1160 GSE Team to Melbourne. Having heard John McCarter's talk, our guests later visited Dunree Fort. We were given a special PSNI escort with motorway cruiser to the border at Muff. The Gardai then escorted us to Redcastle with a police car and motorcycle outrider. Sirens were sounded and lighting bars flashed, much to the delight of Kids, Foyle View staff and Rotarians (big kids!).   16 June 2008 -Evening Meeting - Club Assembly - North West Golf Club, Lisfannon - 18.00 for 18.30pm PE Vincent Grant and his team will outline their plans for 2008-09.
