| 09 October 2006 - Lunch Time Meeting |
| Our speaker was Declan Doherty, Chief Executive of Derry Youth and Community Workshop Limited, an organisation with a long track record of youth training. However, Declan did not talk directly about the training company. Instead he addressed our members on the serious problems inherent in our local youth culture. Declan helped to broaden our views on the causes and effects of these problems and indicated that it was necessary to challenge anti-social behavioural and clearly define what is acceptable and unacceptable. He drew examples from situations which he had met professionally and how implementing the fair but firm rules of the Workshop had proved successful. With clear guidance, young people fell into the trap of relying on urban myths which with other bad influences left them vulnerable and unable to rise to a better quality of life. |

| 16 October 2006 - Lunch Time Meeting Our speaker today was Damien Tierney, Executive Officer, City of Derry Airport. Damien gave a short history of City of Derry Airport from its use as a military airfield during World War II and the first passenger flights to Glasgow from Emerald Airways, the passing of the airfield into Council hands and the development of the new Terminal Building, runway and apron with the help of European Funding.
The Airport currently has scheduled flights to Dublin, Stansted, Glasgow, Liverpool and East Midlands and a service to Prestwick will commence in December. There are a number of Summer charter services operated by Falcon Holidays and Slattery Sun to Majorca, Salou, Lanzarote and Faro.
Work on the safety overrun at the western end of the runway will commence when the properties have been brought into Council ownership. The process of vesting these properties is proceeding.
Damien mentioned that the Airport was still controlled by Derry City Council and it was hoped to set up a more independent Airport body to spearhead future development.
The change in short haul aviation over the last five years has allowed low cost carriers to open many new routes and the low level of fares encouraged many more people to travel and many others to travel more frequently. Damien mentioned that the Airport was always talking to other carriers about new routes from City of Derry and he hoped that services direct to the Continent would arrive sooner rather than later. However, these were dependent on getting the extra safety measures completed at the
end of the runway.
Damien thanked the business community on Derry for its support and asked for this to continue. . |

The ladies of Londonderry Inner Wheel have a long history of service to our community and also of service to their organisation at District and Association level. |
