Our inward Ambassadorial Scholar, Jen Smerdon played a leading role at the Student Presentation at District Conference.

Commander Mark Mellet and fellow officers of the Irish Naval Flagship LE Eithne lunched with us on 19 December 2005 and later addressed club members on board his ship.

 

Mr Shaun Woodward, MP for St Helens South, Minister of State responsible for Health, Regional Development and Security addressed our club on 30 January 2006.

04 July 2005 - Lunch Time Meeting - Changeover Day.
Changeover of Officers: President David Liston handed over the reins of office to President Elect John McClean. President David looked back with pleasure at his year, in which we attracted a number of new Rotarians including the first women to join our club. He thanked members for assisting him in an enjoyable year as President.
President John noted that the club emphasis would now change from sailing to flying and invited members to participate in his charity project. Members wished him a successful year in office.
President John gave a report on the recent District Council meeting.
PP John MacCrossan spoke on Ambassadorial Scholars and on Inner Wheel's membership drive. Rtn Heather Fielding will look after our incoming Ambassadorial Scholar.

We had the pleasure of receiving District Governor Martin Moloney on his formal club visit.

22 to 25 September 2005 - District Conference - Dublin
President John McClean led a team of nine Rotarians and spouses to District Conference in Dublin.
One of the presentation at Conference featured hearing dog Noah who previously visited our club with owner, Mrs Elizabeth Ward. We were delighted that Elizabeth could join us in Dublin. Jen Smerdon, our ambassadorial scholar made a significent contribution to that team's presentation. Our recent GSE visitors from South Africa under Team Leader Brian Mackrell received a tremendous response. PP John MacCrossan, accompanied by PP Sam Connolly (Limavady) extended the formal invitation to Conference 2006 which we are hosting in Derry.

03 October 2005 - Lunch Time Meeting
Our speaker was Judy Houlahan of Artscare. Judy, an experienced nurse and hospital manager, now runs Artscare, located in the Gransha Complex, which brings the performing arts and fine arts to hospital patients. Each year Artscare appoints an artist-in-residence representing one of the artistic disciplines to bring professional, hands-on instruction and/or entertainment to patients. Judy also explained the Gransha Light Project: A strong projected light has been mounted on an old navigational beacon on the river at Gransha. A similar light has been mounted on the Tower Museum in the city. These lights will be switched on for special occasions and will form an illuminated arc, across both the river and the city, from Gransha to the Tower Museum. PP John MacCrossan proposed the vote of thanks.

Our speaker was Maureen Hetherington from Junction, a local organisation which facilitates community harmony, providing a meeting place and research resources for thos involved in conflict resolution. Maureen, a member of the Community Relations Commision, and former Community Relations Officer with Derry City Council, gave a good account of the facilities available and the, sometimes uneasy, paths which she and her colleagues require to travel. President John McClean proposed the vote of thanks.
PP David Liston reported on his recent trip to Chicago, including a visit to Rotary HQ in Evanstown.

The annual Inter Club Match with Limavady, Coleraine and Ballymoney has been rescheduled for Friday 14 October at City of Derry Golf Club from 12 noon. Contact PP Jack McFarland for forther information.

17 October 2005 - Lunch Time Meeting
Our speaker was Gerry Doherty, Chief Executive of North and West Housing Association. Mr Doherty gave a highly informative and well-illustrated talk of the history of the Association, oroginally conceived as the Derry Housing Association, the brainchild of the late Father Mulvey. The Association, which now employs several hundred people, both full-time and part-time, has expanded its operations beyond affordable house-building to include retirement homes, sheltered accommodation and re-habilitation. The Association's projects have spread all over the North-West and cross-border into Co Donegal, where a separate subsidiary has been incorporated. Several of our architectural and civil enginnering members have been involved in various major projects undertaken by NWHA. Rtn Jeremy Arthur proposed a well-deserved vote of thanks to Mr Doherty.
PP Donald Hill reported on the Inter-Club golf competition. While the competition brought some excellent performances, PP Donald lamented the smaller-than-usual number of participants from our club and the visiting clubs, notwithstanding the hard work undertaken by PP Jack McFarland in organising the event.
Overall club winner was Coleraine. The Graham Hunter trophy for the best player from our club was presented to Rtn David Black. Our special thanks to PP Jack McFarland for his usual unstinting efforts in organising our golf events.

24 October 2005 - Lunch Time Meeting
Council Reports.
Our speaker was Tony Henderson, formerley of the DuPont company at Maydown and later a DuPont plant manager in China. Since returning home, Tony has taken a one year course in Tourism, qualifying as a professional tourist guide, later extending his qualification to a three year Bachelor's degree. Tony gave us a most enjoyable talk on his approach to guiding tourists around our city including extracts from his "patter" on the city walls. Rtn Heather Fielding responded most eloquently in proposing the vote of thanks.

31 October 2005 - Lunch Time Meeting
Our speaker was Chief Superintendant Richard Russell, Commander of the Foyle District Policing Unit. In a well-received address, Chief Superintendant Russell gave an account of the many activities of his unit and furnished comparitive statistics on the extent and solution of reported crime in our area. He also fielded some searching questions from members. PP Ian warnock proposed the vote of thanks.

Our speaker was Elaine Way, Chief Executive of Altnagelvin Hospital trust. In a lively address, Elaine covered a range of topics including her personal motivation, management philophsy, statistics about Altnagelvin Hospital, health services demands and planning for future development. Rtn Hugh Lindsay proposed the vote of thanks.
President Elect Pat Kelly, who chaired today's meeting, inducted Mr Phelim O'Neill (Building) to the club. Phelim was a member previously but had to resign due to work commitments. We welcome him back.

21 November 2005 - Lunch Time Meeting - Encore Brasserie - Millennium Forum
As our normal venue was not available today, the meeting was held in the Millenium Forum. DGE Howard Caskie took the opportunity to attend our meeting and brief members on District Conference 2006 which we will be hosting in the Millenium Forum.

28 November 2005 - Lunch Time Meeting
Our speaker was Ellen Cavanagh from Derry City Council who briefed members on the proposed changes to local government structures.
Also in attendance were club finalists in the Rotary Youth Leadership Programme together with their teachers. The students eagerly joined in the question and answer session conducted by Ms Kavanagh. Our club RYLP winner, Stephen Stewart from Foyle and Londonderry College, was subsequently selected as as an Area winner and will join the Irish team for the Euroschola programme in Strasbourg next March. Stephen, your carry our best wishes for a most enjoyable and beneficial time in Strasbourg.

Around 50 members and friends, well up on last year, attended a most enjoyable evening of fellowship and entertainment.

12 December 2005 - Lunch Time Meeting - Special General Meeting
A Special General Meeting was held to ratify Annual Accounts, elect future Club Officers and elect RIBI delegates. Nomination of incoming second vice-president was deferred to a future meeting.

14 December 2005 - Kids' Christmas Party - The Nerve Centre
Over 200 children attended from local primary schools. They were entertained by Parky the Magician who also presented a Punch and Judy Show. Poodle the DJ enlivened the event with several disco sessions. Afted the children had lunched, they cheered to welcome Santa Claus who distributed presents to all the young guests.
Thanks are due to the schools who participated; to the teachers and assistants who accompanied the children; to The Nerve Centre who provided the venue and food for the adults; to Millar's Toys who prepared the presents; to Wheelers who provided lunches for the children; to Parky and Poodle for the entertainment; to club members Pres John McClean, PE Pat Kelly, PP James Buchanan, PP Werner Scheel, PP John MacCrossan for helping on the day; (especially) to Rtn Alwyn Long who organised and guided the event and, of course, to Santa Claus for including us in his busy schedule.

19 December 2005 - Lunch Time Meeting
Our club was honoured today by the visit of Commander Mark Mellett and fellow Officers from the Irish Naval Flagship, LE Eithne, currently visiting our port. After our meal, many members accepted the invitation of Commander Mellett to board the Eithne where we were treated to refreshments, and a presentation on the diverse roles undertaken the Irish Navy. A further presentation told us about the charitable work undertaken by the crew of the Eithne on behalf of the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children and Our Lady's Children Hospital, Crumlin, Dublin. At the week-end the ship had hosted a Christmas party for sick children who came from many locations on both sides of the border. Our visit ended with tours of the ship, in small groups, under the guidance of various officers. We wish Commander Mellett and his crew safe travel and they voyage on a goodwill mission to South America including the commeration of the founding of the Argentinian Navy by Irishman, Admiral William Brown.

Martin Mullen of Round Table, accompanied by colleague Ian MacConachie addressed on plans to host the Conference of Europen Round Table Presidents in Derry at the end of March 2006. With his usual humerous style, Martin told us how he and Ian secured the conference for our city and how they propose to entertain the several hundred delegates and guests who will attend. Members wished Round Table well in hosting the conference.

23 January 2006 - Lunch Time Meeting
Our speaker was Mr Donal Doherty, former Choirmaster and Organist at St Eugene's Cathedral and now Head of Music with the Western Education and Library Board. In a talk illusted by cartoons from Larsen, Donal reminded us of his friendship with our former member Rtn Tim Allen (now with the Rotary Club of St Louis "Club 11"), then Choirmaster and Organist and St Columb's Cathedral, and with Donal, co-director of the Two Cathedral's Festival. Donal gave us an excellent insight to his role and the contribution of music learning to overall student ability. PP Donald Hill proposed the vote of thanks.

Our speaker was Mr Shaun Woodward, MP for St Helens South, Minister of State responsible for Health, Regional Development and Security. In an eloquent, but plain-speaking, address, Mr Woodward covered a number of areas of his jurisdiction concentrating particularly on the provision and funding of the Health Service , Roads infrastructure and the Water Service. The vote of thanks was proposed by PP Jack McFarland.

Speaker: Ms Marie McGale of Mencap. Ms McGale and a colleague gave us an excellent history of Mencap in our city and of the work carried out here and throughout the country.

Speaker: Mr Ian Doyle of Northern Ireland Fire Service. Mr Doyle related to us the excellent work carried out by the Fire Service and of the difficulties and dangers encountered by the Service whose members sometimes come under attack from from vandals while carrying out their duties.

18 February 2006 - President's Night - Beechill House Hotel
Approximately 70 members and guests attended our President's night function enjoying an excellent night of food and fellowship. Speeches were kept short, but entertaining. Toasts were proposed by President John McClean and PE Pat Kelly. Our District Governor was represented by AG Barney Callaghan (Limerick Thomond) and his wife Ursula. Inner-Wheel District 16 Vice Chairman Majella McGee responded on behalf of the guests. Sergeant-at-Arms Ian Warnock kept the show rolling in his own inimitable fashion. Comedian Johnny Day entertained those present to a rich diet of impersonations of both local and foreign dignitaries.
President John took the occasion to award Paul Harris Fellowships to two local people for services to the community, especially to our youth: Mrs Jeanette Warke for her long term contribution to the youth centre in The Fountain and to Donal Doherty, head of music at the Western Education and Library Board.

Speaker: Rt Rev Ken Good, Bishop of Derry and Raphoe. Bishop Good, a former Rotarian, previously addressed us just after he arrived in the city. With several years experience of living and ministering here, Bishop Good outlined what he saw as the positive aspects of our city and elaborated on those aspects and problems which worried him.

Speaker: Mr Seamus Murphy, Director of NWIFHE. Mr Murphy gave us an insight on the current activity in the Institute and its furture development plans. NWIFHE was and is a core component in our city's life.

Speaker: Ms Jen Smerdon, Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar. Jen has been with us since last September, studying at
University of Ulster, Magee College. Apart from her studies she has to carry out her ambassadorial duties including a number of Rotary Clubs in our District 1160. In her address today, Jen talked about her home in Britih Columbia, her sponsoring Rotary Club and District, her family, her experiences doing educational work in Uganda and her experiences living in our community..

13 March 2006 - Lunch Time Meeting
Speaker: Mr Desmond Oliver, Director of the "halo" initative. Mr Oliver explained the purpose of "halo" to attract Business Angels in support of developing businesses. He set out the criteria for such Angels, as well as the risks and rewards. There are about 100 Business Angels in Northern Ireland who have invested significantly in local businesses but only three in our city. Mr Oliver appealed for more such invertors here.

20 March 2006 - Lunch Time Meeting
Speaker: Honorary Member and Past President Russell McKay addressed our members under the general heading of Rotary. Quoting from a Rotary Handbook, given to him at the time of his induction, in 1982, he elaborated his thoughts on the ethics and practical aspects of Rotary, quoting from past experiences, some very positive, some less so. Past President James Buchanan proposed a vote of thanks.
Appropriately, we had the induction of a new member, Rtn Gavin Kileen immediately prior to PP Russell's address.
Some discussion took place on the outcome of the RBS Six Nations Rugby Tournament with PP Frank Lawrance, PP Ian Warnock and PE Pat Kelly being major contributors to a fairly humorous exchange.

27 March 2006 - Lunch Time Meeting
Speaker: Ms Aideen Corr, who has spoken to us in the past, addressed un on the subject of the Cruise Derry Initative and Cruise Ireland. She told us of the changing face of cruising including the building of larger ships, holding over 3,000 passengers, which could not call at our port and the recent trend back to smaller ships which will again see us more able to compete for the luxury market. In the interin, Aideen and our City Council has switched emphasis to attracting visits from Naval Ships on Atlantic patrol. In the past year, we have had a number of visits from various European Navies including the Royal Navy and the Irish Navy. Rtn Jim Foster proposed the vote of thanks.

03 April 2006 - Lunch Time Meeting
Speaker: Our speaker was Mr Glenn Barr, well-known for his work in Community Employment and Community Develoment projects, throughout our City and especially in the Waterside. In recent years Mr Barr co-directed the establishment of a memorial park at Messines in Belgium to commerate those, from all over Ireland who died at the Somme, and in other engagements in the First World War. Associated with this has been the development of an International School for Peace at Messines encouraging interaction between schools across borders and communities. Present today, with Mr Barr, were teachers and students from St Cecilia's College, Lisneal College and Crana College (Buncrana) who have been interacting in this project. After an excellent presentation from one of their number, the four students sang the song "John Condon", recalling the death of the youngest soldier to fight in the First World War. Rtn Eamonn Gee proposed a vote of thanks.

Speakers: From Cresco Trust: Joanne Smith, Community and Employment Liason Officer and Gillian Smyth, Project Manager. Our speakers gave us an interesting overview on the work of the Trust which helps prepare longer-term unemployed people, who must voluntarily apply for the programme, to prepare for the realities of the workplace, and, ultimately, to gain employment. As part of its training programme, Cresco also runs two, Ben and Jerry's PartnerShops, one in Derry (Richmond Centre) and one in Belfast.

We also said "Goodbye" to Ambassadorial Scholar Jennifer Smerdon and to her fiancé Brent Freeman. Jen and Brent are getting married in June and returning to work in Uganda in the Autumn. We enjoyed having you with us and wish you both long and happy lives.

We enjoyed the company of President Niall Loakman and a party of visiting Rotarians from The Rotary Club of Glasgow. They were returning our visit to Glasgow Club thirteen years ago. Not only did they return our visit, they presented us with a large and beautiful pewter Quaich noting that, on our visit, we had presented them with a Crystal Bowl, which they still use. Club Council has plans for the Quaich. Watch this website for News.
