We welcomed Marie Lindsay, Principal of St. Mary’s College to our meeting. We congratulated her on her being awarded Principal of the year 2016 at the recent Blackboard awards.
Marie outlined her career as a science teacher at St. Peter’s College before joining St. Mary’s where she has been for over 30 years. After a spell as Senior Teacher she became Principal 10 years ago. She praised her staff and the fantastic new facilities they have on the Northland Road. Marie spoke about the importance of STEM within the school and how St. Marys are a school specialising in Science. She spoke of the difficulties facing all schools with budget constraints and how this will have a long term impact on other industries. One startling statistic was that 42% of the children in Foyle are on free school meals highlighting the extent of depravation in our own area. There are 700 empty desks in schools in Foyle, although none at St. Mary’s.
President Peter thanked Marie for her visit, on behalf of the members.
