Our Jewel comprises a Rotary Wheel interleaved with an enamelled ribbon carrying the words "Service not Self".
The Wheel is surmounted by The Arms of Londonderry encircled by an enamelled inscription "Vita Veritas Victoria". For further information on The Arms click here to look at our Club Banner page.
The Jewel is topped with a Crowned Harp, the harp being the symbol for Ireland and the crown representing the United Kingdom.
The bottom of the Jewel carries a Shamrock, again symbolising Ireland. The Shamrock is Ireland's national plant and is reputed to have been used by St Patrick, in the 5th Century, to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity while preaching Christianity. Our Presidential Chain, on which our Jewel is usually carried, bears the representation of a bunch of Shamrock.
The blue and red enamelled belt surrounding the Wheel carried the words "The Rotary Club Londonderry". On the reverse of the Jewel is the Inscription "Inaugurated April 25 1922 Londonderry Rotary Club". The club was chartered shortly afterwards on 17 July 1922.
