The Inner Wheel Club of Londonderry

News and Events 2001/2:

June 2001: The AGM included a very enjoyable meal and social occasion. President Una handed over the chain of office to incoming President Dorothy Foster and wished her a successful year. Dorothy expressed that she felt privileged at being President and hoped for an enjoyable year ahead.

September 2001: We began with a business meeting when a number of forthcoming events were organised. President Dorothy welcomed everyone and expressed sympathy to Vida Shaw at the sudden loss of her husband, Peter, and to Mar Hasson on the loss of her sister, Ann.

October 2001: Not too many flares nor platform shoes were seen at a joint Rotary and Inner Wheel evening, but this did not deter the hand clapping and dancing at "Abba the Show" in the Millennium Forum. It was a nostalgic occasion, reliving the Seventies. A glass of wine at the interval and a lovely buffet at the end of the show made it a night to remember.

November 2001: Childline speaker Karen Walker attended our November meeting. She informed us of the invaluable work carried out by this charity in Northern Ireland including the formation of a new group in the North West.

Members brought photographs of themselves as children for the "Guess Who" competition. This provided much amusement as people's features came under close scrutiny. The book exchange was revived and received a good response.

December 2001: Our Christmas Party was held in the beautiful surroundings of the Verbal Arts Centre. Club members provided catering and so a delicious meal was enjoyed by all. Guests included Rotarian wives not yet members of Inner Wheel and Lesley Carver, Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar from USA. Our guest speaker was Liz Weir who held us enthralled with her story telling. A raffle brought the successful evening to a close and President Dorothy thanked members for their help and support and the Verbal Arts Centre for their co-operation.

January 2002: We started the New Year with good intentions by visiting the new "Antares" Health and Fitness Club at the White Horse Hotel. We were given a comprehensive tour of the facilities including the swimming pool and the Ashburn Image Salon.

February 2002: Mrs. Ann Montgomery brought along a beautiful selection of cake icing décor to our February meeting. Although Ann expressed the simplicity of her work, the skill and patience she demonstrated with cake icing intrigued us. She very kindly donated a sample for a raffle. Nominations were given for the posts of Hon. Treasurer of the Association for 2002-3 and Treasurer and Second Vice-chair of No. 16 District for 2002-3. Members discussed arrangements regarding the forthcoming quiz.

March 2002: In March we welcomed District Chairman Pat Coote to our club. Pat, accompanied by President Dorothy, Club Officers and member of Council Myrtle Buchanan paid a courtesy call on the Mayor, Mildred Garfield. Pat was presented with a plaque bearing the coat of arms of the city. Later we enjoyed a very tasty meal in the White Horse Motel where Pat entertained us and tested us with her Inner Wheel Quiz. New members Hilary Doherty and Elizabeth Lindsay were presented with badges. Due to illness Past President Phyl Bredin was very much in our thoughts and our best wishes were sent to her at this difficult time.

April 2002: At our April meeting we listened with fascination to the interesting life and travels of Ros Hamilton. Ros gave an illustrated talk about her life of 50 years in Kenya and her travels to Australia, New Zealand and Madeira.

Reports were given by President Dorothy of the District meeting in Termofeckin and by Majella of the Conference in Glasgow. Arrangements were made for a fund raising quiz being held in the Rugby Club on 15th May 2002.

May 2002: During mid-May a quiz was held at City of Derry Rugby Club which was well supported and raised a substantial sum for the two chosen charities, Leukaemia Research and Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children.

June 2002: The AGM was held in June at St. John's Restaurant in Fahan. Office Bearers gave reports on the club activities and President Dorothy thanked the committee for their support throughout the year. Dorothy handed over the chain to in-coming President Sheila McGrane. Sheila expressed her thanks and said she would like suggestions from members for activities for the forthcoming year. A delicious meal brought an end to a very enjoyable year.
